Islam stands for the belief in One God whom we cannot conceive in our mind. In Christianity it is told that the human beings are created in the image of God and similarly among Hindus too God is in the shape of human beings, although many times with added features e.g. more hands to depict power. This image of God sounds even interesting when some ads, movies or posters depict God as an old man. It sounds logical because God should be compassionate, wise and experienced, so He has to be old. The other way of looking at the same is that God is very close to his death bed! :)
Islam denounces symbols so strongly that we were not allowed even to have a picture of our beloved Prophet (peace be upon him). Allah knows human beings and He knew that they can very well take this picture and some can translate it also as an image of God. As some Muslims say that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was created from noor (light) of Allah. Despite all that, we can see some Muslims revering Islamic personalities a lot, while forgetting the core Islamic principles, some visiting tombs of famous Islamic scholars and some wearing amulets. This is because we human beings love symbols. Its so easy to associate with them.
Just think about it. We can remember so many people by their faces but we know so little of them by their names. Even in the same office, we will recognize everybody with face form the first day but may not know the names of several people even after months.
This is the crucial test that Allah has put on us. He gave us only His word i.e. Quran. And the other indirect words the sunnah of our Prophet (peace be upon him). We have no image to associate with. We have to believe in the unseen. And believing in unseen not easy for human beings. Even many Hindus say that the core Hindu scriptures (which is true as well) denounce idol worship, but either most of the them are not aware of it, and those who are aware justify that idols are needed for concentration when the faith is weak and when the concentration on God becomes supreme, they don't need idols. Dr. Zakir Naik gives a perfect answer to the same that this justification means that Muslims have already reached the supremacy of concentration on God.
