Planned protests against Salaman Rushdie’s visit to Jaipur

An article on Outlook India, And Now a Fatwa to Justify Protests Against Rushdie, criticises the view of the clerics who said that the Muslims have right to protest with the limits of the law. The article quotes Maulana Khalid Rashid Farangimahal saying: "All Muslims, without flouting the law should oppose through every possible means, the visit of the person who used insulting words against the prophet so that he cannot set his foot in this country where crores of Muslims live."

If this is a fatwa, this fatwa was issued by the lawmakers of India when they gave Indian citizens right to express their opinion through democratic means. It was a fair thing that Salman Rushdie was not disallowed from entering India because he holds a PIO card, and he has previously visited India on this basis, but it is also fair that if certain people want to protest his visit, there should not be any decry over it. Anyway, Indian leaders are in the habit of seeing black flags, burning effigies, and slogan-chanting by mobs, why should Salman Rushdie be deprived of this experience of democracy.
